Kentucky Schoolhouse

Back in the hills of eastern Kentucky sits this schoolhouse which was built in 1887. Although no longer used as a school, the building still serves the local rural community.

Notice the building sits on rocks above what is obviously a flood run-off. The front steps are at ground level, a road passes by just outside the right side of the image, and the concrete block is the old well – still containing water that I wouldn’t drink. Has the water gotten worse over the years or our immune systems weaker?

There are two outhouses on the grounds – one for the girls about 10 yards to the left side of the image; the boys’ to the left and behind the photographer. Both sit on the edge of a small creek. A smaller, sometimes wet, almost ditch runs right to left between the trees and the building. Electricity was a much later addition; perhaps as late as 1960s.

The interior (not modelled) is simplicity itself; a single pot-belly stove is the only original fixture. The desks and pulpit are not from the 1887 version of the building. Electricity was added in the 1950s

The model foundation (with posts), the windows, doors, steps, and chimney are 3D printed; the remainder of the building is wood. Two foundations are included: one with the rock supports, the other flat.

The pre-production model appears as shown. The production kit will include “wood” shingles for roofing.
